Health & Safety Guidelines for use of spray gun cleaning machines
DSEAR are regulations to provide protection against risks from fire, explosion and similar events coming from dangerous substances used or present in the work place.
Employer responsibilities:
- Undertake a risk assessment
- Have measures to stop or minimise risks as far as is reasonably possible
- Offer equipment and procedures to help with accidents and emergencies
- Give information and training to employees
- Mark places where potential explosive environment could occur into zones and mark the zones where necessary
Control Methods: Zones
All areas designated as zones are to be protected from sources of ignition. Ignition sources must be kept out of the area at all times.
Protective Clothing (PPE)
Inflammable liquids can be a health hazard if ingested or come into contact with skin or eyes or if their vapours are inhaled. Correct PPE must therfore be used at all times when the equipment is being operated.
Ventilation
Any spray gun cleaning should be carried out in either an equipment cleaning machine with the extraction running or into a chamber which is provided with extraction.
Is a site survey required prior to placing a machine order?
If the answers to the following questions are ‘don’t know’ or ‘no’ – then a site survey is highly recommended to ensure a successful and safe installation takes place.
- Have you sufficient space for the safe operation and installation of the cleaning machine, including safety zone area?
- Have you enough ventilation where the machine is to be placed?
- Is the area, including the safety zone entirely free from any Ignition sources?
